North Eastern Alberta

Serving Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont, Andrew, Two Hills, Saddle Lake First Nations, St. Paul, Elk Point, Vermillion, and Lloydminster

Formerly known as Prairie EMS, our history in North Eastern Alberta goes back to 1991 when founder Rob Hargreaves incorporated several ambulance services under the name Prairie Emergency Medical Systems. Since that time, the operation has evolved to the point that all services now provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) or can offer Advanced Life Support backup from another ambulance service. We also provide inter-facility transfers in our service areas, as well as non-ambulance transport services in St. Paul. Medavie Health Services West operates in Fort Saskatchewan and seven other communities within central and northeast Alberta.

We strive to do our part in creating safe and healthy communities across the province by providing various levels of emergency and other medical services. This service consists of two Primary Care Paramedics (PCP)s on an ambulance.

ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (ALS)

This service consists of at least one Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) and one PCP on the ambulance. ACPs have a wide scope in which they are able to operate under. ACPs have the ability to treat heart attacks, trauma patients, administer medications and intubate (tubing the airway to support breathing).

INTER-FACILITY TRANSFERS

We provide ALS, BLS and NAT (Non-Ambulance Transport) transfers to hospitals and care centers in their regions. Many patients will need to be transferred to other hospital for tests, higher level of care, surgeries etc. MHSW ALS transfers are able to accommodate very high needs patients and can call in additional staff in certain circumstances.

EVENT STANDBY

We provide on-site stand by medical care for a variety of special events including motocross races, road bike races, cart races, rodeos, oil patch work, plant turnarounds and large community events. Both ALS and BLS service are available for standby. We can also provide staff for on-site clinical events.

WORKING WITH OTHER AGENCIES

We also work closely with a variety of other agencies. Staff work directly with the RCMP, local Fire Departments, as well as other EMS partners including AHS in various situations such as motor vehicle collisions or when a patient may be violent. We also utilize the STARS air ambulance service when transport time is critical. When STARS is involved, we first stabilize the patient(s) and then transfer the patient to STARS for further care and rapid transport to hospitals with a higher level of care.

COMMUNITY

We take a lot of pride in the communities where we operate. Presently, we are involved with programs like the Party Program where junior high school students are educated about the dangers of high risk behaviours. We participate with the Party Program coordinator, RCMP, local fire departments and special guests to help the teenagers learn to make good decisions.

Our various other communities activities include helping to manage blood pressure clinics, supporting local sports teams, attending community events and helping the local swimming pool, fire department with medical equipment training, seniors safety awareness training, hospital assistance, AED awareness, and community fundraising events.
